Overview
Niles West High School will be undergoing an addition and renovation project to enhance the learning environment for students. The purpose of the enhancements is to:
- Increase and improve safety for students, staff, and visitors
- Improve the wayfinding experience
- Create more student-centered spaces in the building

Additions
- 3-story addition: 41,748 square feet
- Renovation (reallocated space in the existing building) 13,805 square feet

Relocated spaces for main office, deans, attendance, and student services

New Wolf Den and Student Commons
Enhanced safety features will be incorporated on the first floor. Second floor spaces will primarily support student services. The third floor will have flexible learning spaces.
Sustainability
D219 is committed to creating environmentally sustainable learning spaces at Niles West. The construction project incorporates features to save energy, reduce costs, and overall reduce our carbon footprint. While upfront costs are higher, geothermal energy will offer significant long term savings and benefits. These include:
- Increased lifespan of equipment and spaces
- Savings in clean energy incentives
- Reduced total operating costs
- Lower exposure to utility cost escalations (for example, recessions)

Community Feedback (2024)
As part of the planning process, a survey was distributed in the spring of 2024 to gather feedback. More than 300 students, more than 100 staff members, and approximately 100 community members responded. Survey results were shared at the May 2024 Board of Education meeting. Survey results helped the district evaluate various options for associated improvements.
